52 WC – Ultramarine & Cinereous

week 10 – Ultramarine

Ultramarine is a deep blue colour and a pigment which was originally made by grinding lapis lazuli into a powder. The name derives from Middle Latin ultramarinus, literally “beyond the sea” because the lapis lazuli was imported from Asia by sea (the oldest source of lapis lazuli is Afghanistan). The first recorded use of ultramarine as a colour name in English was in 1598.

52 WC – Carrot

week 7 – Carrot orange

The first recorded use of carrot orange as a colour name in English was in 1684.

The word carrot is first recorded in English circa 1530 and was borrowed from Middle French carotte, itself from Late Latin carōta, from Greek καρωτόνor karōton, originally from the Indo-European root *ker- (horn), due to its horn-like shape. In Old English, carrots (typically white at the time) were not clearly distinguished from parsnips: the two were collectively called moru or more (from Proto-Indo-European *mork- “edible root”, cf. German Möhre).

52 WC – Patina / Verdigris

week 4 – Verdigris (or Patina)

The name verdigris comes from the Middle English vertegrez, from the Old French verte grez, an alteration of vert-de-Grèce (“green of Greece”). The modern French spelling of this word is vert-de-gris (“green of grey”).

Verdigris is the common name for a green pigment obtained through the application of acetic acid to copper plates or the natural patina formed when copper, brass or bronze is weathered and exposed to air or seawater over a period of time. It is usually a basic copper carbonate, but near the sea will be a basic copper chloride.
